Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector-26, Chandigarh, has released a Special Volume of its interdisciplinary research journal “Gyankosh” to commemorate the 350th Martyrdom Day of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the Ninth Guru of the Sikh faith and a global symbol of human rights and religious freedom.

Published under the aegis of the Sikh Educational Society, Chandigarh, Gyankosh (ISSN: 2581-8252) is an annual double-blind peer-reviewed journal, accredited A+ by NAAC. The December 2025 special volume brings together scholarly contributions from diverse disciplines, reflecting the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, critical inquiry, and social responsibility.

While releasing the volume, Dr. Jatinder Kaur, Principal and Patron of the journal, highlighted that Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s martyrdom in 1675 marked a historic and peaceful stand against oppression and forced conversions. Revered as “Srisht Di Chadar,” Guru Sahib’s supreme sacrifice continues to inspire humanity with the values of courage, compassion, justice, and Sarbat da Bhala—the welfare of all.

The volume includes research papers, reviews, and critical analyses spanning history, psychology, sociology, sports studies, environmental concerns, digital culture, and women empowerment. The publication also pays special academic tribute to the enduring relevance of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s legacy in contemporary discourse on human rights and freedom of conscience.

The journal has been meticulously edited by Dr. Surinder Kaur (Editor), with Dr. Harneet Kaur, Dr. Savneet, and Ms. Sukhdeep Kaur as Co-Editors, and Dr. Pooja Jain as Sub-Editor, supported by a dedicated technical and editorial team.

PG Department of Commerce, in collaboration with Bajaj Finserv, organised a 120-hour certificate programme on Insurance, Banking & Finance.
The programme aimed to equip students with practical industry knowledge, enhancing their employability skills. It included HR & communication skill workshops, making them future-ready. Certificates were awarded to students upon completion.
Principal, Dr Jatinder Kaur congratulated the students and appreciated the efforts of the placement team of the college.

GGSCW-26 was imbued with the vibrant spirit of unity, tradition, and festivity as Lohri was celebrated with great enthusiasm on 13th January 2026. Organized by the DSW team, the celebration brought together students, faculty, and staff for a lively cultural gathering.

The event began with the ceremonial lighting of the traditional bonfire, marking the essence of the harvest festival. Principal Dr. Jatinder Kaur, along with other faculty members, lit the bonfire and addressed the gathering on this auspicious occasion. The atmosphere resonated with traditional folk melodies, including “Sundar Mundariye,” as participants offered peanuts, popcorn, sesame seeds, and jaggery to the sacred fire as part of the rituals.

The celebrations concluded on an energetic note, creating joyful and lasting memories. With the participation of students and faculty members, the Lohri celebration at GGSCW-26 stood as a testament to cultural harmony and the importance of preserving traditional heritage within an academic setting.

Showcasing remarkable proficiency and conviction, Akoijam Jessita, a B.A. 3rd-year student of Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26, Chandigarh, clinched the first prize in the Debate Competition at the Panjab University Interzonal Youth and Heritage Festival held at A.S. College, Khanna, on November 10th, 2025. Her victory brought immense pride to the college, celebrating her as a shining example of talent and determination. The college is immensely proud of her achievement.

Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26, Chandigarh, successfully organized a One Day International Seminar titled ‘Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji: From Meditation to Martyrdom – A Study of Legacy and Impact’ on February 5, 2026. The seminar was sponsored by the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), New Delhi, and witnessed the participation of eminent scholars, historians, and academicians from across India and abroad. Principal Dr Jatinder Kaur of the college delivered the welcome address and formally welcomed the dignitaries. The seminar aimed to critically examine the spiritual, historical, and socio-political legacy of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, with particular emphasis on his meditation, martyrdom, and enduring impact on Sikh philosophy and interfaith harmony.
The event was graced by Chief Guest, Dr Balwant Singh Dhillon, former Professor and Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Religious Studies, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and Dr Rajesh Kumar, Director ICHR.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof Pritam Singh, Professor Emeritus of Economics, Oxford Brookes University, UK, a distinguished scholar renowned for his contribution to Punjab studies. He emphasized the unique contribution of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji to contemporary global human rights through his struggle not only for his own followers but also for the protection of the religious freedom of people belonging to other faiths.
As part of the seminar proceedings, the book Honour and Martyrdom: Guru Tegh Bahadur’s Sacrifice Retold, authored by Dr Surinder Kaur and Dr Harneet Kaur, was formally released. Dr Surinder Kaur is the Head of the Department of History at Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Chandigarh, while Dr Harneet Kaur is an Associate Professor in the Post Graduate Department of English at the same institution. The book offers a scholarly reinterpretation of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s sacrifice, highlighting its historical, ethical, and cultural significance, and adds a valuable interdisciplinary perspective to contemporary Sikh studies.
The Chairperson of the session, S Gurdev Singh, IAS (Retd), President, Sikh Educational Society, emphasised on the role of Sikh teachings in promoting service to the nation and society, with particular reference to the significant contributions of women in Sikh Dharma toward social reform, equality, and community welfare.
The seminar featured expert lectures by eminent scholars including Prof Amarjit Singh, Sikh Studies Chair, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar; S Anurag Singh, noted Sikh scholar from Ludhiana; and Prof Mohd Idris, Department of History, Punjabi University, Patiala; who presented insightful perspectives on Sikh historiography. They highlighted the need for every aspect of Sikh history to be weighed and measured so that a compromised history is not written.
The Technical Session was chaired by Prof Prabhjot Kaur, former Principal, Government College for Women, Ludhiana, and Dr Harpreet Singh Hundal, Principal, Sikh National College, Qadian. Prof Prabhjot Kaur discussed the concept of martyrdom as a distinctive feature of Sikh philosophy and highlighted the challenges of historical writing, particularly the limitations faced by historians who are not direct witnesses to events. Dr Harpreet Singh Hundal, through his address, presented the ideology of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji in simple terms, which resonated with the audience. More than 25 papers were received which facilitated rigorous academic discussion and meaningful scholarly exchange among the participants.
The seminar concluded with valedictory remarks and a formal Vote of Thanks given by Col (Retd) Jasmer Singh Bala, Secretary, Sikh Educational Society acknowledging the efforts of the organisers, speakers and participants. Dr Birendra Kaur, Vice President, SES and S Karandeep Singh Cheema, Joint Secretary, SES also graced the occasion.
