National Seminar on “From Roots to Routes: Socio-Economic Implications of Transnational Community” Sponsored by ICSSR-NWRC Held on 8th March 2019
The Post Graduate Departments of Sociology and Economics of Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26, Chandigarh organized a One-Day National Seminar on the topic “From Roots to Routes: Socio-Economic Implications of Transnational Community” sponsored by ICSSR-NWRC on 8th March, 2019. The Seminar focused on the crucial need to examine the relationship between transnationalism and fundamental socio-cultural and economic relations that are reconfiguring the conditions of migration, social movements and the rise of transnational communities. The occasion was graced by Dr. Gurdeep Kaur, Gynaecologist (Retd.), GMSH-16, Chandigarh as the Chief Guest, Er. S. S. Virdi, Chief Engineer (Retd.) and Col. (Retd.) J. S. Bala, Secretary, S.E.S. The Principal, Dr. Jatinder Kaur, extended a floral welcome to the distinguished dignitaries. The Inaugural Session commenced with a Concept Note by Dr. Reena Parti, Coordinator of the Seminar. The Keynote Address was delivered by Prof. Sucha Singh Gill, Former Director-General, CRRID, Chandigarh and a Special Lecture was delivered by Prof. Manjit Singh, Department of Sociology, PU, Chandigarh. At the conclusion of the Inaugural Session, Col. (Retd.) J. S. Bala extended a vote of thanks to the esteemed panel.
National Seminar on ‘CATERING TO THE GLOBAL LEARNER: QUALITY ENHANCEMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION’ Held on 22nd November 2018
A NAAC-sponsored One Day National Seminar on ‘Catering to the Global Learner: Quality Enhancement in Higher Education’ was organised by Post Graduate Department of English of Guru Gobind Singh College for Women in collaboration with Internal Quality Assurance Cell on November 22, 2018. The key note address was delivered by Professor Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Guru Jambeshwar University, Hisar, the inaugural address was delivered by Professor Vijay Kumar Shrotryia, Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi and a special address was delivered by Professor Paramjit Kaur Tulsi, Department of Education, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Chandigarh. Participants from the various colleges of the city participated in the seminar and various papers on the quality enhancement of higher education were presented. A Panel Discussion was held on ‘Best Practices in Higher Education Institutes’. The panelists included Dr Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director, HRDC, PU, Chandigarh, Dr Amol Bhondekar, Principal Scientist, Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, Chandigarh and Ms. Prerna Kalra, CEO, Open Hand Solutions, People Management Experts. The occasion was graced by Er. S. S. Virdi, Chief Engineer (Retd.) and Col. (Retd.) Jasmer Singh Bala, Secretary, Sikh Educational Society.
'Master Tara Singh in Indian History: Colonialism, Nationalism and Politics of Sikh Identity ' held on 18th April 2018
The Dept of History organized a National Seminar on Master Tara Singh in Indian History: Colonialism, Nationalism and Politics of Sikh Identity on April 18, 2018. The seminar, sponsored by Sikh Educational Society was a culmination of efforts to bring scholars, historians and intellectuals on a common platform to further enrich the academic discourse. The Chief Guest was Jathedar Gobind Singh Longowal, President, Shiromani GurdwaraParbandhak Committee, Amritsar and the Guest of Honour was Prof Jaspal Singh, Former Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala. The Key Note address was delivered by Prof Raghuvendra Tanwar, Emeritus Professor in History, Kurukshetra University. The Seminar also included Book Release Ceremony of “Mastar Tara Singh in Indian History: Colonialism, Nationalism and Politics of Sikh Identity” authored by Prof JS Grewal, Former Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and ‘Akal Takht Sahib: JotiTeJugati” authored by Dr Balkar Singh, Professorof Eminence. Bibi Kiranjot Kaur (Grand daughter of Master Tara Singh), Member, SGPC, Amritsar, Former General Secretary SGPC, Amritsar and Prof Jaspreet Kaur (Grand daughter-in-law of Master Tara Singh), Dept of History, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar were the special guests on the occasion. Prof InduBanga, Emeritus Professor in History, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Prof Prithi Pal Singh Kapur, Former Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, DrDharamjeet Singh, Former Principal, Sikh National College, Banga, Punjab, S Harvinder Singh Khalsa, Former President, Punjab Lalit Kala Academy, Chandigarh and Dr Harpreet Singh Hundal, Asst Prof, Dept of Punjabi, Sikh National College, Qadian shared their critical insights with the students and Faculty. Department of Science organized National Seminar on “Emerging Trends in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology”, sponsored by College Development Council, PU, Chandigarh on February 18, 2017. The aim of this seminar was to provide a common platform to academicians and young researchers to exchange their new ideas and explore the various aspects of this emerging technology. The Chief Guest was Prof Navdeep Goyal, Dept of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh. DrSuvankarChakarverty and Dr Neha Sardana, Scientist from institute of Nano Science and Technology Mohali, highlighted Future Trends of Research in the concerned field. Faculty members, Research Scholars and students from various Regional Colleges, University and Research Institutes attended the Seminar. Prof Keya Dharamvir, Dept of Physics, PU, Chandiagrh and Dr C R Mariappan from Department of Physics, National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra cited several facts on the development of nano-structured materials for energy storage devices.

The Department of History organized a national seminar on “Continuity and Change : Socio-Cultural Changes in the Punjab from the Beginning of Eighteenth Century to mid-Nineteenth Century” on August 27, 2016.The objective of this seminar was to clinically examine and thus arrive at historical truths by continuously engaging in a dialogue with the staple of history’s raw material ranging from personal memoirs, diaries, to other valuable archival sources. The Seminar was financially supported by Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi. It was attended by scholars from the disciplines of Archaeology, History, Sociology, Home Science, Punjabi, English, Journalism, Cosmetology, Arts History and Visual Arts, Psychology and students of the college and academicians as well as other persons from the public and media. The Chief Guest for the seminar was Prof Harmohinder Singh Bed, Member, Language Committee, MHRD, Govt of India, New Delhi. The Guest of Honourfor the occasion was Prof VeenaSachdeva from the Dept of History, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The Keynote address was delivered by Prof Amarjit Singh, Dept of History, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. S Gurdev Singh Brar, President, SES, offered a vote of thanks on behalf of the SES and College. Technical Sessions were chaired by Prof Kulbir Singh Dhillon, Dean and Former Head, Dept of History, Punjabi University, Patiala and Prof Jagtej Kaur Grewal, Dept of Arts History & Visual Arts, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The Valedictory address was delivered by Prof Sukhmani Bal Riar, Chairperson, Dept of History, Panjab University, Chandigarh. 'Trends and Issues in Contemporary Literature' held on 27th May 2016
A National Seminar on 'Trends and Issues in Contemporary Literature' was organized by the Post Graduate Department of English on May 27, 2016. Eminent writer Prof Surjit Hans from GNDU, Patiala was the Chief Guest of the day. Prof Hans is credited with the translation of the entire work of Shakespeare into Punjabi, a task accomplished over more than two decades. Prof Harpreet Pruthi, Dept of English and Cultural Studies, PU, Chandigarh was the Guest of Honour while the Key Note Address was delivered by Prof Anil Raina, Dept of English and Cultural Studies, PU, Chandigarh. Among other speakers were Prof Roshan Lal Sharma, Head, Dept of English and European Languages, Central University of Himachal Pradesh who delivered the Inaugural Address and invited speaker, Prof Tejinder Kaur, Dept of English, Director, Centre for Diaspora Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala. The Seminar delved into the main areas of contemporary literature with a view to understand the issues which woke interest in the field of language and literature today. The seminar was sponsored by Sikh Educational Society. Col (Retd) JS Bala, Secretary, SES, presented the Vote of Thanks. Proceedings of the Seminar were published by the Department in the form of a volume titled Trends and Issues in Contemporary Literature edited by Dr Jaslene Dhaliwal, Dr Ramnik Kohli and Dr Harneet Kaur Sandhu.
Secular and Religious Music in Punjab: Growth and Evolution(c.1000 to c.1849)’ held on 27th April 2016
A National Seminar on “Secular and Religious Music in Punjab: Growth and Evolution(c.1000 to c.1849)", under the aegis of Sikh Educational Society, was organized by the Department of Music and Department of History on 27th February, 2016. Ms Lucky Malhotra, Head, Department of Music and Dr Surinder Kaur, Head, Department of History, were Convener and Coordinator of the Seminar respectively. Teams from Jawwadi Taksal Ludhiana, Bhaini Sahib, Ludhiana and Department of Music, Punjabi University, Patiala performed Gurmat Sangeet. 60 delegates from different Universities and Colleges, including Panjab University, Chandigarh, Punjabi University, Patiala, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and Raja Man Singh Tomar Music and Art University, Gwalior presented papers on the history, origin and growth of secular and religious music in Punjab. The Chief Guest of the Seminar was S Gurdev Singh, IAS (Retd), President, Sikh Educational Society. Prof Pankaj Mala Sharma, Dept of Music, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the Guest of Honour. Principal Dr Charanjeet Kaur Sohi welcomed the guests and delegates. Prof Sukhmani Bal Riar, Head, Dept of History, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the Key Note Speaker of the event. Pandit (Dr) Harvinder Sharma, Former Principal, Govt Post-Graduate College, Kalka (Haryana) gave practical demonstration by playing Sitar in the Valedictory Ceremony. The Vote of Thanks was given by Col (Retd) Jasmer Singh Bala, Secretary, Sikh Educational Society.
'Gender and Violence: Structure, Power and Resistance (The Context of North Western India)' held on 3rd February 2016
Post Graduate Department of Sociology organized a One Day National Seminar on 'Gender and Violence: Structure, Power and Resistance' (The Context of North Western India) sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR-NWRC) on 3rd February, 2016. The seminar aimed to have in-depth understanding of violence among the genders. This seminar attempted to understand violence from different perspectives and create awareness to educate and empower the students to break the silence and speak up to build a proactive and engaged community by instilling hope and taking affirmative action. Mr Rubinderjit Singh Brar, DHE, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest for the Inaugural Session. The key note address for the seminar was given by Dr Jagmati Sangwan, an eminent activist and General Secretary of AIDWA. S Gurdev Singh Brar, President, SES and Col (Retd) Jasmer Singh Bala, Secretary, SES presided over the seminar. Faculty members and research scholars from various institutions presented around 60 papers. Posters made by the students were displayed and appreciated by Dr Jagmati Sangwan. 'Ageing in Comtemporary Indian Society- Issues and Concerns’ held on 26th March 2015
The Department of Sociology has organized one day National Seminar on the theme ‘Ageing in Comtemporary Indian Society- Issues and Concerns’ on 26thMarch 2015. Padam Shree Awardee, Dr Dalip Kaur Tiwana was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Prof Sherry Sabbarwal, Dept of Sociology, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered the key note address. Dr BK Nagla, Prof(Retd), Dept of Sociology, MDU, Rohtak provided sociological insights into the seminar theme. The seminar proceedings were released in the form of book titled Ageing in Comtemporary Indian Society- Issues and Concerns, in which more than 40 research papers by delegates were published. In the two technical sessions, more than 25 papers were presented. Students from various institutions presented posters on the occasion. The seminar aimed at realising a healthy and self-reliant India by focusing on issues such as health, food security, infrastructure, industry, sustainability, environment, and happiness, among others. It also aimed to draw attention to building the economy’s capacity to fight back against ongoing health issues and economic slowdowns with a particular focus on research, innovation, and technology. Mr. Kanwal Dhaliwal, an eminent painter, sculptor, writer and translator from London was the honourable speaker for the event. He apprised the students of the contents of the book 'From Volga to Ganga' which was originally written by Mahapandit Rahul Sankrityayan in 1942.
